Important: Check the official guidelines before you apply

BSC Education Malta supports students throughout their journey, but we are a tuition provider and we do not issue visas. Visa regulations are set by the Government of Malta and are subject to change.

You should always cross-reference this page with the official Maltese authority on visas – Identità before applying.

FAQs - BSC Malta Visa

Do I Need a Visa to Study at BSC Malta?

Whether you need a visa depends entirely on your passport nationality, not your course type.

I am from the EU, EEA, Switzerland, or a visa-exempt country. What do I need?

This route applies to citizens of the EU/EEA, Switzerland, and countries with a 90-day visa-free agreement with the Schengen Zone (such as Brazil, Colombia, Japan, and South Korea).

Courses under 90 days: You do not need a visa to enter and study in Malta. You just need a valid biometric passport valid for at least 6 months past your stay.

Courses over 90 days: You may enter visa-free, but you must apply for a National Long-Stay Visa (D-Visa) or an eResidence permit once you are in Malta. This application must be submitted through Identità at least 21 days before your initial 90-day visa-free stay expires.

My nationality requires a visa to enter the Schengen Area. What do I need?

This route applies to citizens of countries who do not have visa-free Schengen privileges (such as Turkey and China).

Courses under 90 days: You must apply for and secure a Schengen Short-Stay Visa (C-Visa) before travelling to Malta.

Courses over 90 days: You must secure a National Long-Stay Visa (D-Visa) before leaving your home country.

How long does visa processing take, and what are the fees?

When booking your visa appointment through the official VFS Global network or a Maltese diplomatic mission, you can choose between two service tiers:

Standard Service: The earliest appointment slot is typically 21 days after booking. We recommend applying 3 months before your course start date.

  • Schengen Short-Stay (C-Visa): €90
  • Standard National Student (D-Visa): €100

Extended (Express) Service: Offers accelerated booking and next-day appointments where available if you need your visa urgently.

  • Extended Student (D-Visa): €150-€250 depending on country

Note: Fees are paid directly to the visa centre/Identità, are non-refundable, and exclude local VFS courier or service charges.

What documents do I need to apply for a visa?

To apply for a National Long-Stay Student Visa (D-Visa), you must submit all documents in English. According to the official Identità checklist, you will need:

  • Valid Passport: Must be valid for at least 10 months (for a D-Visa) with at least two blank pages.
  • Visa Application Form and Photo: Completed, signed, and accompanied by one passport photo matching ICAO standards.
  • Official BSC Malta Acceptance Letter: Your official Letter of Acceptance (LOA) confirming your full-time course enrolment and proof of tuition payment.
  • Proof of Financial Sufficiency: Bank statements from the last 3 months showing you have access to funds amounting to at least 75% of Malta’s national minimum wage for every month of study. If you have a sponsor, you also need their 3-month statements, a signed sponsor declaration, and a copy of their ID.
  • International Debit/Credit Card: Front and back copies of the bank card you will use to access your funds while in Malta.
  • Travel Medical Insurance: Valid for the entire Schengen area with a minimum coverage of €30,000. BSC offers fully compliant student medical insurance — ask our team for details!
  • Flight Itinerary: Confirmed flight itinerary showing your arrival (no more than 2 weeks prior to course start). A return ticket is mandatory if your course is under 6 months.
  • Proof of Accommodation: Confirming a minimum of your first 14 nights in Malta matching your name exactly. BSC can provide an official signed/stamped letterhead document if you book your accommodation through us.

What should I do when I arrive at Malta Airport?

When passing through Malta Immigration, do not pack your documents in your checked luggage. Keep printed copies in your hand luggage. Border control officers may ask you questions about your accommodation, financial self-sufficiency, and course details. Please ensure you have printed copies of your BSC Offer Letter, accommodation confirmation, and bank statements ready to present.

Can I work while studying in Malta?

Students holding a valid Student Visa have the right to legally reside and study in Malta. After your arrival, you can apply for an Employment Licence through JobsPlus, which permits you to work part-time for up to 20 hours per week, provided you have a formal job offer from a local employer. Please remember that work must never interfere with your studies; full class attendance at BSC Malta remains completely mandatory.
